End of Empire

A great empire, like a great cake, is most easily diminished at the edges.

  1. Great photo. Love this old filling station! As it happens, we have an intact duplicate of the structure just five doors down from my house, though now it houses a consignment shop. Every one of your photos is timeless and memorable.

    • Thanks, David. You’re right: this was a gas station, as well as a general store; when I was a kid, I used to go here for moonpies, stage planks, and Royal Crown Cola. It was the center of the hamlet of Prairie Point (one store, one post office, one cotton gin) until, well, it wasn’t any more. My dad worked out of the post office next door, which, by the time I took this photo a couple of weeks after his death, was completely gone. All of it is gone now.
